Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU Detailed Review: Compact Gaming Laptop
While thinking about buying a gaming laptop we find it very difficult which one to choose. So, here I will help you out by giving you a detailed review of Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU, one of the best gaming laptops in the market now. Asus ROG series is one of the favorites for Gamers and Graphics purpose.
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU is one the latest laptop from Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers). This gaming machine is compact, light, and slim with modern hardware specs and features.
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Design and Build
The Zephyrus M GU502GU has been grabbing eyeballs of onlookers around me with their striking designs that look civilized. It is one of the slimmest and lightest gaming laptops we have seen in a while and it is, by all reasonable standards, a handsome enough laptop. Asus hasn’t compromised on the build quality as the aluminum. The Laptop is 18.9MM slim with Magnesium-Alloy chassis for strength and durability weighing less than 2kg. The back cover is shiny with a great designer finish pattern and a ROG brand logo of course, that turns red while the laptop lid is in open.
The edges, despite being slim it holds all the necessary ports that is required in a laptop — Ethernet port, an HDMI output, a USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-A port, 3.5mm headphone jack, mic socket, two USB 3.1 Gen1 (5Gbps) ports and one USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-C port.
Once you open the lid, the inner matte finish makes the laptop more elegant and gives it an official look. That is been greeted by the RBG backlit keyboard and a big trackpad. The bezels are really narrow from the three sides and a big bezel from the bottom. The only minus point about the laptop that I found is that it is not having a webcam.
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Display
The Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU boasts a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) Anti-glare IPS-level panel with a resolution of as expected 1920 x 1080. The fast 144Hz refresh rate enables true high-FPS gameplay, while the 3ms grey-to-grey response time ensures crisper, clearer graphics even during intense, fast-paced matches. With wide viewing angle makes the screen ideal for playing games and watching videos or movies while resting also. It covers only 100% of the sRGB spectrum, Pantone Validated.
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Keyboard & Touchpad
Now, coming on to the keyboard, the Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU is a type-in-style inspired from the desktop gaming. The Per-Key RGB Lighting gives it that look with N-key rollover. This keyboard also offers 4 Hotkeys (Volume down, volume up, mute, Armoury Crate).
The keyboard is designed well for gamers and can handle the gaming pressure that’s fast and tight clicking on the keys. The keycaps are softly coated and comfortable to touch, and typing on this keyboard felt quick and reliable, once I got used to the feedback, which is similar to most ultraportables out there, so rather familiar for me.
Just beneath the keyboard, centered sits an average plus-sized touchpad with a smooth plastic surface. It performs well with everyday use, taps, and gestures. The clicks are integrated within the surface and they’re clicky, but also rather clunky and loud.
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Ports & Connectivity
As already mentioned the laptop is slim from the sides but it contains all the necessary ports and connectivities.
(Ethernet port, an HDMI output, a USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-A port, 3.5mm headphone jack, mic socket, two USB 3.1 Gen1 (5Gbps) ports and one USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-C port, Charging Port).
Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Performance
The Laptop’s speed, power, and portability achieve a perfect balance in the well-rounded ROG Zephyrus M. It’s ultra-slim frame house a powerful 9th gen Intel Core i7-9750H CPU with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics. Also having 16GB of DDR4-2666 RAM and 512GB PCIe SSD with RAID 0 support, and one addition M.2 slot for storage expansion. Therefore you can easily imagine how easy is to work on the ROG Zephyrus M through everyday work and multitasking faster. With its lightning-fast load times even for heavy-duty apps and large games runs smoothly. The ROG Zephyrus M slices (Means: Makes the work easy) through anything you throw at it.
|Plus Points||Minus Point|
|Slim form factor||No webcam (only a minor thing)|
|144Hz refresh rate|
On that note, the Zephyrus M GU502 is an excellent multi-purpose laptop, and while expensive right now, it should increase in value in the months to come as it gets discounted.
Asus put together excellently crafted and mostly practical notebook, a good typer and a solid performer once tweaked, capable of running quietly and cooly with everyday use, or fast with demanding loads and games. I’m only rating it at 4.25 though, as I still believe there’s better value for a gamer in the RTX 2060 variant of the Zephyrus S GX502, as well as quite a few quirks that might steer those interested in a competent all-rounder towards something else.
Among those, there’s the fact that the screen is not bright enough for outdoor use, which you might need in an all-rounder, and also doesn’t lean back past 120-130 degrees, the battery life and speakers are not spectacular by any means, and the IO lacks Thunderbolt 3 or a card reader.
Quality control is another concerning aspect that has plagued Asus laptops in the past, that’s why I would advise you to only get this from reputable stores that properly handle returns and potential RMAs, and don’t be disappointed if you do end up with quirky product that you’ll have to send back, just be aware that it can happen.
We’ll wrap up our review of the Zephyrus M GU502GU here, but the comments section down below awaits your feedback, questions, and impressions, and I’d love to hear what you think about this laptop and its overall value.
